Born on July 18, 1985, in Los Angeles, as Marcus Hopson, he grew up in Panorama City, a mostly Hispanic neighborhood of Los Angeles. Since he was twelve, Hopsin enjoyed skateboarding, something that is often featured in his music videos. He attended James Monroe High School and took some special education classes, but never graduated.

In 2004, he and a group of his friends were arrested for vandalizing school property. They claimed it was a prank that went wrong, but the judge set a $20,000 bail. Hopsin was sentenced to one year in Los Angeles County Jail. Once he got out, he bought a microphone and started recording music.

Career

His debut album titled Emurge was released in 2003. The album has never been released officially but has served as the first stepping stone in his career. In 2007 he signed with Ruthless Records. Unhappy with how the record house handled his album Gazing at the Moonlight, he sought to be released from his contract, citing lack of financial compensation, artist support, and promotion. He then launched his own record label, Funk Volume.

His first signing was SwizZz, a former classmate from Monroe High. Together, they recorded Haywire, a mixtape that was certified gold for being downloaded over 100,000 times.

His second album, Raw, was a huge success. The second single from that album, Sag My Pants, was filled with Hopsin’s disses of various rappers, including Lil Wayne, Drake, Soulja Boy, Lupe Fiasco and Rick Ross.

In 2012, he appeared on the cover of XXL magazine, as one of the top 10 rising rap stars. He also had a role in That’s So Raven and Murder in The Frist TV shows, as well as acting in movies Max Keeble’s Big Move in 2001, Fame in 2009, and Bomb the World in 2010.
