Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff was born on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Her father William Kappelhoff was a music teacher, while her mother was Alma Sophia Kappelhoff. For some time in her life, she thought she was born in 1924 before she found her birth certificate. She had two brothers, but both passed away. Their names were Richard and Paul.

Doris Day was married four times. The first time, it was from 1941 until 1943 to Al Jorden, who passed away in 1967. She then got married to a saxophonist George Weidler, who died in 1989. Their marriage lasted for 3 years, from 1946 until 1949. Her third marriage was the longest, to Martin Melcher from 1951 until 1968. He was a film producer who sadly died in 1968. Her fourth and final marriage was between 1976 and 1981 to Barry Comden, who passed in 2009. She only had one son, who also passed away in 2004. His name was Terry Melcher, a famous producer, and musician.

Career

The first job in her long career as a radio program “Carlin’s Carnival”, where she worked as a vocalist. She later worked alongside Barney Rapp, Les Brown, Jimmy James, etc. One of her first major hits came in 1944, called “Sentimental Journey”. Others followed, including “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time”, “I Got the Sun In the Morning”, and others. This success made her one of the wealthiest singers of those times.

With her band, she appeared in a film in 1941, while she later appeared in a musical comedy “Romance on the High Seas”, where she sang a song called “It’s Magic”. The song was a top hit. “My Dream is Yours” is another musical comedy where she was featured and sang the song “Someone Like You”. This trend continued, and she appeared in many movies and recorded numerous famous songs.

The top of her career came when she started working in a comedy film “Pillow Talk”, after which came “Lover Come Back”, “Send Me No Flowers”, “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies”, “With Six You Get Eggroll”, and other big hits.

It was here when her former husband Martin Melcher, and his business partner Jerome Bernard Rosenthal, spent all of the money she saved.

Her show “The Doris Day Show” on CBS started in 1968 and was successful all the way until it ended in 1973.
