In 1986 Christopher Weaver founded the company as a division of an engineering research firm called Media Technology Limited or for short MTL. Weaver wanted to develop games in the PC market and that is why he founded Bethesda. The president of the company, Vlatko Andonov, explained that Weaver planned on naming the company Softworks, but couldn’t, because the name was already taken.

Early Phase

The first physics-based sports simulation, Gridiron was created by Bethesda Softworks. The company was based in Rockville, Maryland and it worked on numerous projects like The Elder Scrolls RPG. In 1994, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, which is the first chapter of The Elder Scrolls RPG, was released.

The company is credited with publishing titles based upon movie franchises, including Star Trek, The Terminator, and The Pirates of the Caribbean. Flashpoint productions are the company’s development studio, which they have gotten in 1995. The Elder Scroll’s chapters Battlespire and Redguard appeared in 1997 and in 1998 but didn’t gain success as Arena did.

Robert A Altman founded a new parent company for Bethesda Softworks, named ZeniMax Media. In 2002, Bethesda Game Studios was established which made Bethesda a publishing company of ZeniMax Media. The same year, ZeniMax stopped being an employer of Weaver, so Weaver filed a lawsuit against it, claiming his business partners betrayed him. The parties settled out of court in 2007, and Weaver remained a major shareholder in the company. Starting with next year, the company opened branches of publishing in London, Paris, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Benelux, and Sydney. ZeniMax Media acquired id Software in 2009.
